- a band from Sheffield - grew up together and formed a band while they were at school - put their early demo sessions on a CD and distributed it to fans - a lot of their music was shared on social media through their fan base -they made their own record label- 'Bang Bang' : making them an independent band
You can draw many similarities between the Beatles and the Arctic Monkeys They were both:
Four piece bands which included vocals, guitar and drums
British bands who were successful both at home and abroad
Both had their own record labels so they could control the sound and what music they released
They both had a predominantly 'guitar' sound
Both of them preferred performing in smaller venues rather than big stadiums
Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor - performance video: it didn't have a narrative; just the band performing This was new at the time because most bands didn't use this format for a music video and it was important for them to record this kind of video to show that they were new and different to the industry.
Mise en scene
The video looked vintage and old, considering it was filmed in 2010
It looked more like it was filmed in the 80s-90s
They used a Ikegami 3-tube colour television camera from the 1980s to give it a more aged effect.
The Arctic Monkeys designed the video so that fans would perceive them in a certain way: new and interesting as not many bands were doing this at the time.
They also wanted to bring the feeling of popular British bands in the 80s and 90s back such as Oasis and Blur so they used cameras from that time to evoke that feeling.
They wore casual clothes to keep it real and down to earth and it was a live studio recording; kind of similar to shows like Top of the Pops
I think the image projection works quite well and it fits in with their band however fans of other popular artists at the time such as Katy Perry or Taylor Swift perhaps wouldn't be used to or like the way and the style in which the video was shot.
Gender Ethnicity Age Region Socio-economic status
What would the Arctic Monkeys audience demographics be in terms of GEARS?
Gender
Primarily male although there would be quite a few females as well. I think the audience would be more male because they are not your 'typical boyband' where all the members are good looking and have a large female fanbase. In this band they are more realistic- they have spots, they don't have perfect hair and they wear normal clothes so this would be something that boys at the time could relate to.
Ethnicity
I would guess that since they were based in the UK in the 2010s, their audience would be fairly multicultural however since all the band members are Caucasian there might be a majority of white fans
Age
Their fans would probably be around the same age as them 19-25 because they could relate and enjoy the music more than people who were older or younger than that
Region
At first, they were well known in Sheffield and other areas near sheffield such as Leeds and Manchester but then they started to become well-known throughout the whole of the UK and eventually progressing to America. Their songs also matched this - at first they sung about normal things such as going to the pub and life in Yorkshire however as they started to get more international they sung about more universal things.
: One Direction
Explain how the construction of the band was deliberate and was designed to appeal to the target audience
The band was constructed or put together through X-Factor and this would appeal to the target audience (13-18 year old females) as it gives them an interesting backstory or an 'underdog' story.
This is also appealing because they seem like 5 friends and this is relatable and easily recognizable for the target audience- The band has 5 members and each of the five members has their own personal style and personality which links in with immensely popular bands such as The Beatles and more recently, The Spice Girls.
This appeals to audiences because fans relate to one member of the band (their favorite) the most and they are seen not only as one group but as distinguishable people which is more like normal, everyday life because people or a group of friends don't really all dress the same.
They are also all normal, regular people from towns or cities in the UK- none of them are really rich and for the socio-economic demographics they are around B-C1/2 which is generally normal for most of their target audience. This makes them seem really approachable to audiences because audiences like seeing bands who are made up of normal people.
History- One Direction
X Factor
Last song as a band
Symbolises the band breaking up- going into solo careers
"You and me got a whole lot of history"
You is direct address to the fans which makes it personal. Their saying that the fans and the band have a lot of history
They used a worms-eye shot which puts the band in a powerful position- they have the say in the situation because they decided to break up
The clips of the flashbacks or the past are in black and white which shows that it's in the past its "history" and it also gives it a nostalgic feeling,
The clips of them singing or the present are in color to show that this is what's happening now and what's going to happen
Band was formed through X Factor- a reality TV singing competition
They originally auditioned as solo artists but weren't good enough
Simon Cowell put them together as a group- manufactured
Talent shows like X Factor are really popular- underdog, rags to riches etc.
X Factor (2004- present)
Pop Idol (2001-2003)

regulation in music videos
- the BBFC (British Board of Film Certification) regulates music videos - things that are issues:drugs, bad language, nudity, dangerous behavior or violence - set standards and ratings for certain age ratings - Ofcom regulate the content of songs - A famous example of Ofcom's regulations is the Sex Pistols- 'God Save the Queen' - it wasn't allowed to be played because it was critical of the government and monarchy. - In some circumstances, bad language is allowed such as The Pogues- Fairytale of New York
